It was a big night for the Christian Patriots (9-1, 4-0) as they had already clinched the Eastern League Crown previously looked to keep their momentum going heading into the playoffs.

That momentum carried them to a pretty convincing victory over the high powered University Centurions (4-6, 0-4) and also more than likely clinched themselves the No. 1 seed in the San Diego Section Division III playoffs.

In the preseason the Patriots were picked to finish somewhere in the middle of the pack due to the fact that they had graduated some major talent which included multi-year starter at quarterback Brad Jeremiah who had thrown for over 60 touchdowns in his two seasons at the helm. In stepped Owen Easley who took over and showed people that the Patriots were not a team to be slept on this season.

Christian came into the regular season finale to finish the job and indeed they did as Easley was able to have his way with the Centurions defense as he threw for 229 yards on 16-of-20 passing and two touchdowns. Easley also used his legs when needed as he ran for 53 yards on 11 carries and scored three touchdowns.

One of the Patriots early scores of the game for the Patriots was set up by a couple of Gonzalez runs which was capped by Easley’s short runs which made 14-0. The Centurions cut the lead in half when Gray found Jurne¬†Smith for 61-yards and the score.

In the second half, Christian would lead 28-7 but University City would rebound and comeback behind a pick-six by Hezekiah Pavlich which made 28-21.

One of the big benefactors of Easley against the Centurions was Alexander Gonzalez who was able to do his part as he corralled 102 receiving yards and accounted for 89 yards on the ground, he also picked off a Centurions pass and returned it to the house late in the game for 33 yards. On the night, Gonzalez was able to tally 191 yards of total offense against the Centurions.

Coming into the contest the Centurions were averaging about 30 points a game but the defense for the Patriots wreaked havoc against them the entire night as they sacked Gunnar Gray four times and Justin Roehl also had a pick-six for 34-yards.
