EL CAJON – In a contest where both teams would combine to light up the scoreboard for 81 points the Christian Patriots pulled out a wild contest 44-37 over the Point Loma Pointers.

The Patriots got the fireworks going early as the defense was able to create turnovers and the offense was able to cash them into points. The turnovers started on the first drive for the Pointers as Patriots defender Jesse Matthews was able to pick off a pass, He would then go on to grab a 15-yard pass from Brad Jeremiah and score on a toe tapper to make it 7-0.

Point Loma was able to match the score as they drove the field and score on a 1-yard plunge to even it 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. Christian would actually take a two touchdown lead as Jeremiah was able to find Alonzo Richardson for 61-yards and Alex Gonzalez for 28 yards to make it 21-7.

Despite being down by two scores the Pointers offense didn’t stop as they were able to close the gap via a touchdown and a field goal to make it 21-17 at the break.

Once again the connection of Jeremiah and Matthews would prove to be a good one as he would haul in a 7-yard strike but once again the Pointers answered as Ball would rumble his way for a 30 yard score.

The Pointers would actually take their first lead of the game when Grady  opened the final quarter with a 7-yard strike to put the Pointers up 30-28.

Christian and its offense wouldn’t go away as they were able to retake the lead as Jeremiah found Gonzalez who caught the ball in the flat and just flat out sprinted his way for 71-yards and the score. Unfortunately the Pointers offense wouldn’t go away as well as they were able to move down the field behind Ball who on the night accounted for 3 touchdowns was able to smash his way into the end zone for 8 yards and the score to put the Pointers up 37-36. On the evening the Pointers racked up 327 yards on the ground.

Despite being down by one point this didn’t phase Jeremiah as he did his best Joe Montana impression and calmly drove the offense down the field. He drove the Patriots down to the 19-yard line of the Pointers when on the next play he felt the pressure and just before he got hit was able to get the pass off to Matthews who hauled it in for another go-ahead score. Now the Patriots led 44-37.

Point Loma would have one last shot at it. They gave It their best as they marched down the field all the way into Patriots territory to the 19-yardline. With only 34 seconds left on the clock and a fourth and 13 situation, Ball went back to pass but Patriots defender Justin Roehl got his paws up to deflect the pass and break it up ending any comeback by the Pointers.

All in told there were four lead changes in the wild fourth quarter.
