GROSSMONT HILL LEAGUE

SANTANA 2, VALHALLA 1

In what turned out to be a dramatic contest between the two squads the Santana Sultans were able to pull off the road victory in the waning minutes.

Down 1-0 after Carter Boucek scored for the Norsemen on a weak shot the Sultans knew they needed a spark and indeed they received that bolt when Omar Nuristani was able to find the back of the net just before halftime to tie the contest 1-1. Santana thanks to a beautiful cross pass from Lane Dukes made sure the momentum would change hands.

In the second half, both teams had a hard time gaining any type of momentum as it was a complete and utter stalemate. Both squads defenses kept things in check. With the game looking like it would go to bonus play with only a couple of minutes left the Sultans were able to muster some luck as Shapol Aziz in the 78th minute found Nick Valentine who was able to blast it past the Valhalla goalkeeper for what ended up being the game-winning goal.

Defensively for the Sultans both Davin Burroughs and Nathan Hughes were able to outmaneuver the bigger sized lineup of the Norsemen thus squashing any opportunities they may have had against the Sultans.

With the loss, the Norsemen fall to (7-4-4) overall and (1-2-1) in league and sit in fourth place while the Sultans improve to (11-3-4) overall and (3-1) in league and are a top in first place which is a first for them in the Hills league.

The victory by the Sultans was the very first road victory for a Hills league squad in league play this season as the home team had won every contest so far. Also, the victory by the Sultans is their first over Valhalla since 2016 and only their second in the last 9 seasons.
