PREP BASEBALL: SULTANS CON’T HOT START WHILE PATRIOTS TAME THE LIONS

SANTANA 4, LA COSTA CANYON 2

SANTEE (3-5-20) – The Sultans behind an early attack were able to double up the visiting La Costa Canyon Mavericks on Thursday afternoon.

Santana got rolling in the bottom of the first inning as Elijah Reber singled which was followed by two straight walks to load the bases. With the bases full up stepped Tyler Fitzgerald who lined a ball to right field that went for a double bringing home both Davin Burroughs and Reber.

They would tack on another run to lead 3-0 when Dean Landers hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Ethan Wright to tag and score.

Another run for the Sultans came in the bottom of the second inning when Fitzgerald lined to center field scoring Reber to make it 4-0.

On the mound for the Sultans was Koda Alto who was keeping the Mavericks offense at bay as the defense was making the plays in the field.

La Costa Canyon wouldn’t even get anything on the board till late in the game and Alto had been relieved by Landers who came in and despite giving up a couple of runs which were charged to Alto finished things up to preserve the victory.

For the Mavericks, Ju Grossmont took the loss as he gave up 3 runs on 2 hits in his 0.1 innings of work which also saw him walk 2 batters on the day.

On the other side, Alto worked 5 innings in which he gave up 2 runs on 4 hits while walking 1 and struck out 4 on the day, Landers came in and tossed 2 innings to get the save in which he gave up 2 hits and walked 1 and struck out 2.

With the win, the Sultans will definitely raise some eyes when it comes to being ranked as they have in the last few days both Poway and Cathedral Catholic.

 

KENDRA COUCH CLASSIC

PATRICK HENRY 4, LINFIELD CHRISTIAN (TEMECULA) 2

SAN DIEGO (3-5-20) – Despite giving up two runs early on the Patrick Henry Patriots settled down and were able to take advantage of opportunities to double up the Lions on Thursday.

The Lions would score the games first run when Mitchel Simon doubled in Michael Harkins and later on another run would score when Simon raced home on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

Patrick Henry would scratch a run in the bottom of the second inning thanks to Quinn Roelofs who singled and would later score on a ground ball out by Brady Hull.

An RBI single by Kenny Peak bringing home Miguel Covarrubias would tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning.

Roelofs who was on the mound really had it going after giving up the two runs early on as he shut down the Lions.

With the score still tied in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Patriots would take their first lead of the game thanks to Mateo Medina who hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Andrew Guana.

Later on, Medina would again knocked in Guana on a sacrifice fly to give the Patriots a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Finishing out the game for the Patriots, Xavier Lopez came in and was able to get the final three outs despite the lone single.

Jared Bartek of the Lions went 6 innings giving up 4 runs on 7 hits while walking 4 and striking out 1 in the loss.

On the other side Roelofs garnered the win going 5 innings giving up the 2 runs on 4 hits while walking 3 and striking out 7, Lopez earned the save giving up 1 hit while striking out 1.
