Foothills Christian 81, Canyon Crest Academy 51

EL CAJON (12-15-17) – Foothills Christian moved to 3-3 on the season with an 81-51 opening round victory over Canyon Crest Academy at Tournament host Grossmont High School Friday night. A big first quarter got the Knights up and running after a week off, following their BattleZone Tournament in Corona. TAESHON CHERRY had two three-balls and eight of his game high 39-points in the opening 8-minutes. Sophomore YASSINE GHARRAM also tallied eight in the first and finished the night with a season high 14-points.

After building a 27-13 lead the Knights stumbled in the second quarter. MJ Metz had seven of his team high 17-points in the frame. The surge left the Ravens trailing just 35-30 at the break.

Foothills appeared to wake up after the Ravens’ charge. The Knights dropped another 24-points in the third to build their lead back to 15 heading into the fourth quarter. Canyon Crest failed to answer with a gate crashing comeback. Junior wing DERRICK CARTER-HOLLINGER continued his hot start with 16-points and 2019’ classmate JAREN NAFARRETE was in double figures with 10-points as well. DAVE DIXON rounded out the Knights ledger with two-points on the night.

Foothills and Canyon Crest had only met twice previously, both at the Grossmont Holiday Classic. The Ravens’ luck seems to have improved only slightly as the Knights walked away with an 84-52 win in 2008 and a 97-64 win in 2009.

The Knights will travel to La Jolla tomorrow night (December 16, 2017) to tale on the North County host in the Grossmont Tournament. The Vikings will be coming off their opening round game against Westview. La Jolla was 5-1 entering tournament play on Friday night (December 15, 2017). The lone loss for La Jolla came to Helix at the Hilltop Invitational. The Knights and Vikings are set to tip at 7:30 pm on Saturday.
