LA MESA (8-30-19) –  It may be only the second week of the season but the offense for the Grossmont Foothillers looks like mid-season well-oiled machine that will be very hard for teams to stop.

The Foothillers (2-0) started their season off on the right foot last week with a convincing 43-14 victory over Mira Mesa. This week they were able to take the offense to another level against the visiting Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders (1-1) as they put up points after points en route to a 59-26 win.

In the big victory the Hillers racked up 704 yards of total offense on the evening and set a new school record in the process and according to the CIF Section record book the 4th total in history.

Grossmont would start the offensive barrage with a Jahmal Nevels 16 yard touchdown 3:08 into the contest. After an Aiden Calvert 60 yard touchdown, Jaime Odom would toss his first 2 scores of the night. On the night he racked up 5 touchdown passes including connections to both Devin Jackson and Brody Schicker to make it 21-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The Crusaders came right back with a score of their own courtesy of Trevor Appelman finding Raymond Romero for a 6-yard score with 10:31 remaining in the first half. However, things would only get better for the Hillers as they pulled away with 2 more Odom strikes, one to Robert Tucker and one to his favorite target on the night Schicker. They would add to their lead when Axel Gonzalez booted a 45-yard field goal just before the half ended to enjoy a 38-12 lead.

Things got a little interesting in the second half when the Crusaders scored on two straight possessions against Grossmont who at this point were rotating guys into the game. Grossmont answered with a 2nd Nevels score and a Justin Brown Ng 41 yard touchdown to make the game out of reach for the Crusaders.

On the night for the Hillers, Odom had a stellar night as he threw for 437 yards on 23-31 passing and the 5 touchdowns and he ran for another 30 yards. The ground game for the Hillers was productive with Robert tucker picking up 69 yards on 10 carries and 6 receptions for 117 yards with a score. His counterpart Nevels scored twice off of 7 rushes for 65 yards.

Receiving wise Schicker was the main target of the evening as what will be usual this season with 8 catches for 136 yards, Nathan Ng also had a good day coming off of the bench with 2 receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown.

Next week the Foothilelrs will have a bye week then the following week will host another South Bay squad in the Eagles of Olympian High School on September 13th.
