Roundup: Roope Powers Foothillers; Chambers throws NO-NO; Richter Shines for Steele

GROSSMONT HILLS LEAGUE

 

GROSSMONT 8, SANTANA 4

Out in La Mesa on Wednesday afternoon the Grossmont Foothillers ((16-11 Overall, 4-3 GHL) took care of business with three runs in the third inning.

Early on the Santana Sultans (10-9 Overall, 5-2 GHL) would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a base hit by Mackenzie Sims which scored Nicole Penton March.

Moving along to the bottom of the third inning Grossmont jumped right back into the contest with three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Getting the Hillers rolling was leadoff hitter Halle Sweiss who singled, Aly Allmann walked, Natalie Emery singled to load the bases.

A couple of batters later with the bases packed Samaria Roope was hit by a pitch which allowed Sweiss to score, later on with two outs Rainee Foster lined a single to left field scoring two runs.

 

Grossmont would really break things open in the fourth inning with three consecutive base hits, Katalina Contreras followed with a walk to score Sweiss, Roope again is hit by a pitch which scored Allmann, Jordan Brown followed with an RBI single to make it 6-1. They would tack on a final run to make it 7-1.

 

The Sultans had a golden opportunity in the top of the fifth inning as Brianna Jerig led off with a single, Madison Mendez followed with a single, with one out Natalie Sims singled to load the bases.

With the bases loaded Roope was able to get Joey Barkhimer to line out to third base in which Allmann promptly tagged third base for the inning-ending double-play.

 

Santana would finally push across two more runs in the top of the fifth inning when Jerig hit a ball that was misplayed allowing two runs to score which made it 7-3.

However, The Hillers answered with another run in the bottom of the sixth as Roope smashed her county-leading ninth home run over the left field fence.

Santana would push across one final run in the top of the seventh when Mackenzie Sims knocked in Marilyn Downing to make it 8-4.

In the loss, Mendez only lasted 3.1 innings in which she gave up 7 runs on 8 hits while walking 2 and striking out 1. Coming in and tossing 2.2 innings of relief was Emma Leggett who gave up 1 run on 1 hit while walking 1 and striking out 3.

For Grossmont Roope picked up the victory as she went 7 innings in which she gave up 4 runs on 9 hits while walking 3 and striking out 2.

 

 

GRANITE HILLS 13, VALHALLA 0

On Wednesday afternoon the Granite Hills Eagles (18-8 Overall, 7-0 GHL) took care of business as they scored twelve runs combined in both the third and fourth innings to keep their momentum rolling against the Valhalla Norsemen (6-18 Overall, 1-6 GHL).

Not only did the bats do the job but the Eagles came within an eyelash of a perfect game as Staci Chambers didn’t allow a hit in her five innings of work.

An RBI single by Sydney Huse (2-2, R, 4 RBI, 2B) gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

 

More of the same for Granite Hills in the bottom of the third inning with one out when Brooke Bertussi (1-3, 2R, 2B) reached on an error, Haley Johnson (2-2, RBI, 2B) walked, Taylor Rose (2R) into run, Chambers laced a single to score Bertussi, a couple of batters later Kelly singled in Rose to make it 3-0.

Granite Hills would eventually take a 5-0 lead when Amaya Esparza (2-2, 3R, RBI, 2 2B) scored on a passed ball and finally, Paige Baird (2-3, 2 RBI) drove in Kelly to make it 6-0.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth inning Bertussi roped a double, Johnson followed with a double to score her which made it 7-0 after Chambers singled Esparza followed with another double to bring home Rose.

Leading 8-0 the Eagles added more when Huse doubled in Julia Tysling and Esparza which gave them a 10-0 lead, Rylee Omahen drove in a run with a single which was followed by another RBI  single by Baird, the final run for the Eagles came when Omahen stole home.

 

Granite Hills would come within one out of a perfect game when with two outs Yanely Gonzalez hit a ball that was misplayed allowing her to reach.

Taking the loss for Valhalla was Delaney Stettler who in her 3.1 innings of work gave up 12 runs on 12 hits while walking 3 and striking out 1.

On the other side, Chambers was dealing as she fanned 11 batters in her 5 innings of work as she gave up 0 runs on 0 hits and walked none on the day.

 

 

STEELE CANYON 8, WEST HILLS 2

With the game scoreless heading into the late innings, the Steele Canyon Cougars were able to take advantage of opportunities that allowed them to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game away.

Steele Canyon (11-13 Overall, 3-4 GHL) pushed across the games first runs in the bottom of the fourth which started with Maggie Carpenter reaching on an error, she would score on a base hit by Lexi Hutchinson, Danielle Directo singled which advanced Hutchinson to third base, she would score on an error.

Leading 2-0 the Cougars added more when JJ Venzor (3-4, R, RBI, HR) led off by belting her fifth home run of the season, a couple of batters later Bianca Morales (3-4, 2R, 2 RBI, HR) followed with her fourth blast of the year to make it 4-0.

West Hills (6-15 Overall, 1-6 GHL) would finally push across a couple of runs to cut the Cougars lead in half when Sabrina Brown (1-2, 2 RBI, 2B) roped a double that scored both Callia Rooks (RUN) and Shannon Kim (1-3, R).

In the bottom of the inning, the Cougars answered back with an RBI single by Audrey Bagge (1-4, R, RBI) followed by another RBI single by Morales to score Kassandra Jaggard.

Leading 6-2 the Cougars rounded out their scoring when Marley Rimoldi singled (1-1, 2 RBI) in both Bagge and Morales to make it 8-2.

Despite allowing Alyssa Borbolla in the top of the seventh to reach on an error Grace Richter finished things off as she retired the next three batters.

Taking the loss for the Pack was Kimie Brouard who went 4.2 innings in which she gave up 4 runs on 9 hits while walking 1 and striking out 1.

Richter for the Cougars tossed a complete 7 inning victory in which she gave up 2 runs on 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 6 on the day.
