SAN DIEGO (11-15-19) – After last week’s revenge win over San Marcos for a 2018 loss in the first round the Hillers went for another go around with Madison who had beaten them previously in week 5 earlier 31-13.

Last season the Foothillers played Madison (7-4) at Warhawk Stadium and won a wild playoff upset in the 6-11 matchup 44-42. This time around Madison would prevail in another great matchup between these two teams to move on to the semifinals.

The Warhawks would start off the ball and cap a long drive spanning 5:40 with a Jaylin Thomas to Herman Smith 13-yard touchdown pass. Grossmont (8-4) would answer back with a Jaime Odom touchdown pass when he found Robert Tucker from 11-yards out to tie the score at 7-7.

Madison’s offense, however, didn’t skip a beat as Keontae Springs would run past the Grossmont defense for 48 yards to make it 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Hillers answered back again as Odom once again connected with Tucker on a forty-yard score. After a Madison fumble and a Grossmont missed field goal attempt, Springs would take full advantage and give the Warhawks a 21-14 lead after another touchdown run.

Grossmont would miss another field goal attempt thus keeping the score at intermission in favor of Madison 21-14.

The Hillers would start the second half with the ball and eventually tie the game at 21-21 when Tucker ran in from six yards out. However, the Warhawks answered right back quickly as Springs did what he does best and zipped his way through the defense to the tune of 64-yards and retake the lead.

Grossmont would actually eventually take a 28-27 lead to end the third quarter after a blocked extra point and a Jaime Odom pass to Robert Tucker for 58 yards.

Madison answered first in the fourth quarter thanks Springs who punched it in from a short distance and after a missed two-point conversion a 33-28 lead.

Grossmont would have a chance to take the lead back and possibly win the game but two interceptions at the goalline would shoot them in the foot, similar to their earlier matchup. The Warhawks would ice the victory as Springs ran another one into the end zone which was his fifth on the night to make it 40-28.

Madison’s Springs would end up with 331 yards on the ground and 5 touchdowns.

On the other side for Grossmont, Odom finished the evening 21-34 for 359 yards and 3 touchdowns but he also was picked off 3 times. On the ground, Robert tucker finished with 50 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries but would have 172 yards receiving with 6 catches and 3 scores.

Brody Schicker for Grossmont would haul in 7 balls for 70 yards and sophomore Nate Acevedo who was called up from the JV caught 2 catches for 50 yards and showed that he has a bright future in a Grossmont uniform.

With the win, the Warhawks will host the Oceanside Pirates next week in the Semi-Finals.
