GROSSMONT HILLS LEAGUE

SANTANA 2, GRANITE HILLS 0

What a difference 48 hours makes in the sports world. It was only a couple of days ago that Santana lost to Grossmont 3-1 in what was considered a bad loss.

Taking on Granite Hills for the second time this season as they previously met in tournament action with the Sultans prevailing both teams played an even match which went 0-0 at the intermission.

Both teams went back and forth until Omar Nuristani was able to take advantage of an opportunity from 15-yards out and blast it into the back of the net for his 11th goal of the year to make it 1-0 in the 54th minute.

Santana would once again take advantage of another opportunity as Lane Dukes from outside of the box put one past the Eagles goalkeeper for his 7th goal of the season in the 72nd minute and extend the lead 2-0.

The two-goal lead would stand as the Sultans defense also known as the “Iron Curtain” made up of Colton Snipes, Austin Hanson, Sam Odenkirk, and Ben Phelps really put a hamper on the Granite Hills Eagles and any type of offense they thought of mustering. Granite Hills only had four opportunities on net and Sophomore Joaquin Cruz made them all to preserve the shutout and claim the victory.

The win for Cruz was his second on the season and improved the teams record overall to 12-5-1 and 1-1 in league play while Granite Hills dropped to 4-9-4 and 0-1-1 in league play.

“The defense really played lights out and I am really proud of my team for coming out how they did against Granite.” Said Coach Luke Phillips on the game and the effort.

Next up for the Santana Sultans is a home game on January 18th against the Helix Highlanders at 6:30 PM while the Granite Hills Eagles will take on Grossmont on January 16th also at 6:30 PM.
