NEW YEAR’S CLASSIC TOURNAMENT

JANUARY 3RD, 2019

SANTANA 70, CENTRAL UNION 64

The new year so far has been kind to the Santana Sultans as they remained unbeaten so far with their victory over the Central Union Spartans on Thursday night in Santee.

Led by Brandon Simmons who scored 28 points including 8 points in the fourth quarter to lead all scorers as the Sultans held off a furious Spartans rally in the final quarter.

Early on Santana jumped out to a 6-0 lead and would hold a slim 16-15 lead after the first quarter. They would eventually stretch out the lead and take a 37-29 advantage into the half.

The Spartans in the third quarter jumped back into the contest despite being down by 13 points as they held the Sultans scoreless and went on a run to cut the double-digit deficit to 47-40. The Sultans would add a final basket to take a 50-40 lead heading into the final period of play.

Other big contributors for the Sultans were Ben Hart who grabbed 8 boards and dished out 9 assists, Simmons besides leading all scorers grabbed 9 rebounds. Other scorers for the Sultans included Carson Burton who put up 11 points as did Desmond Williams.

Things became really interesting in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter as the Sultans shooting went a little cold and the Spartans made a small comeback but the Sultans held as they would grab a couple of crucial rebounds off of Spartans missed shots.

With the victory, the Sultans improve to 4-10 and will take on Victory Christian on Friday night at Santana at 6 PM and on Saturday night the 5th of January they will again take on cross-town rival the West Hills Wolf Pack at 7:30 PM.
