GOLD-SILVER TOURNAMENT

SANTANA 10, CALEXICO 0 (5 INNINGS)

Dominant pitching and offense propel the Sultans to the short game victory on Wednesday afternoon out in the desert against the Bulldogs.

Senior and Florida Atlantic University-bound Madison Mendez was stellar in the circle as she only allowed a single hit and struck out one on the day. Offensively the Sultans tallied 7 hits in which both Lakaila Aquiningoc-David (2-4, R, RBI, SB) and Joey Barkimer (2-3, R, 3 RBI, HR) each had multiple hits.

Leading 3-0 in the top of the third inning the Sultans would tack on a couple more runs when Barkhimer smashed a two-run home run which scored Emma Leggett who had come into run. They would extend their lead in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a hard hit ball by Mendez which was misplayed which allowed Mackenzie Sims and Shelby Holmquist to both score to make it 9-0. Santana tacked on its final run on a single by Aquiningoc-David to score Ashley Madrigal (2 R).

Santana behind Mendez would retire the Bulldogs 1-2-3 on three consecutive groundouts in the bottom half of the fifth inning to end the game and get the victory.

The victory was also first-year head coach Eddie Cyman’s first career varsity victory.
