It will be a lot different on the East side of Santee as the Santana Sultans will look a lot different than the 2016 version that saw them make the San Diego CIF Division IV Championship game. The Sultans graduated arguably one of the best tail backs to ever play at the school in Bobby Wallace who either set or tied 9 school records, three different receivers who all had over 800 yards of receiving plus five starting lineman including an All-CIF selection and now at USD in Trent Forster.

These are positions and players that are tough to replace but head Coach Tim Estes who is in his 6th year believes they will be alright.

Santana does have quite a few returners and one of those is at a very key position which is at quarterback. Senior Josh Oedewaldt returns after throwing for 2,934 yards and 33 scoring strikes last season.

At the receiving position for the Sultans will be senior Cameron Kane who should be the go to guy this year. Joining him will be senior Davon Chestnut who looks to have a full season under his belt this year.

Returning at running back will be junior Ian Litten who had 60 yards and is the only returner to have a touchdown last season. Dale Genshaw will also see some time at running back as well among a couple others.

One of the interesting keys to the Sultans success is the offensive line. The good thing is you have very capable returners returning in Jose Chairez, Brian McRae, and Braden Nieto. If the line can do what they do than Oedewaldt and company will have big success.

Defensively the Sultans should be alright as senior Landon Wood who had 78 tackles and 10 for a loss and also 2 interceptions anchors the defense. Joining him will be sophomore Luke Simanek who as a freshman showed strides to what the future will be.  Colton Snipes and Dylan Hanslik will also be key contributors.

One of the key weapons for the Sultans will be in the special teams area as they will have three year starting senior Timmy Tischer back. Last season he was 52 of 55 in extra points and also had 5 field goals. Tischer this season will look to add more as he will possibly set some school records this year and is also ready one of the more prolific kickers to ever play at the school.

The Sultans due to reaching the Division IV title game last season have been bumped up to the Division III this year. They open up on the road at Castle Park in the season opener. The second game of the season is the big city rivalry game at West Hills for “The Mayors Cup.”

Santana comes home for a couple of games against Christian, and then play Clairemont. After that they finish up non-league at Mar Vista.

The first game of Grossmont Valley action is against Granite Hills, second is at Monte Vista and then a home tilt against El Cajon Valley Braves and they will finish the regular season on the road against Mount Miguel.
