PREMIER DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

SANTEE (12-23-19) – Whoever said a low scoring soccer match is boring hasn’t watched a high school soccer match. On Monday evening the Santana Sultans (5-3-2) made history as they defeated the Rancho Bernardo Broncos (3-3-5) to win the Premier Division Championship.

Previously both squads met a couple of days earlier and tied 2-2 but this time around Coach Phillips had a different game plan going in. The game plan was to make sure that Rancho Bernardo’s Lex Bernier didn’t do any damage to beat them. Despite having a couple of opportunities in the first half the game plan was going accordingly as Bernier was having a hard time getting through the Sultans defense.

Still, Santana needed to put together something on offense and they were finally able to midway through the first half when an opportunity occurred as Lane Dukes took a pass from Nick Valentine and blasted it from twenty-feet out past the Bronco goalkeeper to give them a 1-0 lead.

For the rest of the first half, the Sultans were able to keep the game plan going as they kept the Broncos from getting any type of opportunity to score.

After the intermission and the second half started it was more of the same as both teams had various opportunities to score but neither would.

With the clock stopping at the two-minute mark which meant the time would be kept on the field the Sultans were within reach of their historic victory.

However, the Broncos were able to get one last opportunity as the Sultans were called for a foul in the penalty box which meant the Broncos would have an opportunity to tie the game on a penalty kick.

But Sophomore Andrew Peterson made what was the biggest play of contest as the Broncos player tried to fake it and kick the ball to the right but Peterson moved to the right and punched it away. After the ball was knocked away there was a mad scramble as the ball was live and the Broncos couldn’t take advantage as their last-ditch effort went out of bounds.

“The defense really made it mostly easy as they played great and the when the PK that I had to stop it was something I had to give back to them for everything they did tonight.” “I was almost expecting it when he faked it I didn’t move at all and I just moved right.” Said Peterson who made 14 saves and was named player of the game for his efforts.

Santana would inbounds the ball and for the remaining time keep the ball out of their end of the field until the officials blew the whistle to signal the end of the game.

The Sultans voyage to history was made possible as they tied highly ranked La Costa Canyon to start the tournament 0-0, beat Central 3-0, tied Rancho Bernardo 2-2 to give them a spot in the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, the Sultans defeated Calexico 2-1.

Santana after winning the top Division of The Grossmont Tournament will now have a couple of days off and play again on Thursday in the San Diego County Cup where they will take on Hilltop who won their respective Division Championship in the Grossmont Tournament.
