VALHALLA 76, SAN YSIDRO 70

In a battle of two of the top teams in Division III the Valhalla Norsemen were able to rally and never look back against the San Ysidro Cougars on Tuesday.

Both teams would pace each other in the first quarter as it was 18-18 after one period of play. In the second quarter the Cougars would start out with five unanswered points to take the lead but the Norsemen answered with a 13-0 run to take a 31-23 lead. San Ysidro answered back and would eventually lead at the break 39-38 as DJ Dudley nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key.

After going back and forth in the third quarter the Norsemen would with about three minutes remaining take a 46-44 lead as Dominic Safarta hit a three-pointer and they would extend their lead at the buzzer as Joe Avalos canned a three to give Valhalla a 49-46 lead after the third quarter.

Valhalla in the fourth quarter never looked back as Safarta and company held the Cougars in check.

Safarta on the day for the Norsemen scored 19 points and dished out 12 assists for the double-double while his partner Avalos canned 7 three-pointers en route to scoring 23 points.

The win by Valhalla is huge as it will definitely give them an advantage down the line as far as playoff implications.
