SANTANA 31, SERRA 14

SAN DIEGO (8-30-19) – The last time the Santana Sultans and the Serra Conquistadors met was in the second week of last season and the home team Sultans held off a last-minute comeback attempt as Serra botched a field goal.

This season the Sultans traveled inland for the showdown between the two top teams in Division IV. The winner of the contest would have a leg up for CIF playoff seeding if it came to it between the two teams.

The Conquistadors coming off being shutout 18-0 in their season opener to Scripps Ranch started out strong as they would take an early 8-0 lead when Dustan Ellison scored from 4-yards out and the 2 point conversion was good.

Serra would take the 8-0 lead into the second quarter as they had shut down the high powered offense of the Sultans. However, that changed when Santana finally put something together on the offensive side which culminated into a Randy Smith 31-yard touchdown catch to pull within 8-7.

Holding to the slim one-point lead the Conquistadors answered with another score when Broock Desta caught a touchdown from Timmy Zebroski but the extra point was blocked.

Blocking the extra point for the Sultans was Luke Simanek who got a big hand on it and the score remained 14-7. The Sultans would pull within 14-10 when Nathan Hughes booted a 29-yard field goal.

Trailing 14-10 to start the second half the Sultans in the third quarter would put up the quarter’s only points when Brooks Moutaw found the house from 5-yards out to give them their first lead of the game 17-14.

The defense for the Sultans came up big in the third quarter as they shut down the Conquistadors offense.

Santana would eventually score again in the fourth quarter thanks to Nathan Temple who found Smith for a 28-yard score to make it 24-14. However, the Conquistadors wouldn’t go down quietly but once again the Sultans defense made the big play when Drew Temple picked off a pass and ran it back to the house for the pick-6 and put the game away.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Sultans Cameron LaRiccia tallied 9 tackles.

On the night for the Sultans on the offensive side Temple finished with 210 yards and 2 touchdowns and threw an interception on 15-of-26 passing.

His top receiver was Randy Smith who hauled in 7 balls for 143-yards and 2 scores.

With the win the Sultans improve to 2-0 while the Conquistadors fall to 0-2.
