CHULA VISTA – In a battle of the top two teams in Division IV, the visiting Santana Sultans shook off the early distraction and proceeded to jump out to a 14-0 lead.

The distraction that the Sultans managed to overcome was heavy traffic on a Friday evening as they arrived only 25 minutes before kickoff. Despite this, it was all cylinders for Santana.

The Sultans would end up scoring the only touchdown in the first quarter when Nathan Temple nailed his favorite target Randy Smith for 31-yards and a 7-0 lead with 5:20 remaining in the first quarter.

They would connect again in the second quarter to extend the lead as Smith hauled in a 12-yard pass. Leading 14-0 and completely dominating the game the Sultans looked to go into the intermission but the Aztecs who had been kept off the scoreboard would finally breakthrough as Isiah King caught a 15-yard pass from Alexander Dixie with only a second remaining.

Santana after the extra point was blocked would take a 14-6 lead into the break.

The visiting Sultans had to be feeling good that they had been able to overcome the early adversity and also the fact that they hadn’t faced speed yet in the season.

On the defensive side, they picked off the Aztecs a couple of times as well in the first half by Nathan Hughes and Nick Valentine.

But with that being said things looked good for Santana as they would tack on another score when Brooks Moutaw who ran for 75 yards on the night broke the plain for a 2-yard score to make it 21-6.

Later on, in the fourth quarter, the Sultans would put up another touchdown, this time Nathan Hughes with 8:47 in the 3Q would be the recipient of the fun. They would add their second score of the quarter after forcing another four and out.

After the defensive stop, the Sultans extend their lead 35-6 with about seven minutes remaining in the contest.

Temple on the night for the Sultans threw 4 touchdowns and an INT and tallied 198 yards, Smith was the big recipient on the night as he caught three scores for 75 yards.

Hughes besides catching a touchdown also had a couple of interceptions on the defensive side of the ball.

In the last 12 quarters of play the Sultans have only given up the six points and on the season 32 points which is the least amount in the Division while scoring 203 points.

With the win, the Sultans improve to 5-0 for the first time since 2011 when they started out 8-0 and finished 11-2 along with a CIF Division IV runner up.

The win also gives the Sultans a leg up in the Division IV race as they will keep the top ranking in the Division and that home-field advantage as the top seed. With the loss, the Aztecs fall to 4-1.

Santana now has won the five in a row against the Aztecs and has outscored them 179-20.

Next week the Sultans will go back home where they will celebrate homecoming with a contest against Division V top foe Vincent Memorial.
