SANTANA NEW YEAR’S CLASSIC

SANTANA 56, CALIPATRIA 40

For the first time in about a month, the Santana Sultans are able to claim a victory. They did so in handing the Calipatria Hornets a double-digit loss behind Brandon Simmons who led the Sultans with 18 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and a blocked shot.

Both teams came out sluggish as it was a low scoring affair in the first quarter but the Sultans managed to outscore the Hornets 3-1 over the final couple of minutes to lead 8-5. The Hornets managed to tie things up with a quick three-pointer in the second quarter but the Sultans changed the momentum as they bore down and went on a 6-0 run to retake the lead 14-8 thanks to back-to-back three balls.

The Sultans were able to keep the momentum going as they played a clean quarter in which they didn’t turn the ball over which propelled them to a 28-21 lead at the break.

Things in the third quarter got interesting as the Sultans couldn’t buy a basket in which the Hornets took advantage and were able to pull within 34-32. But the Sultans regrouped and over the last couple of minutes outscored Calipatria 8-2 to take a 42-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

Other contributors for the Sultans in the victory included Ethan Neuhoff who grabbed 8 rebounds, Ben Hart who grabbed 7 rebounds and had 2 assists and a steal.

“It was good to finally put one in the win column, we have been playing tough teams and hopefully that will help prepare us for the upcoming league schedule which starts next week.” Said Santana head coach Kevin Barcelona.

The Sultans will look to continue their winning as they take on Central Union on Thursday night at 7:30 PM at Santana.
