SANTANA 59, EL CAJON VALLEY 52

Early on the home team Sultans couldn’t buy a basket as the visiting El Cajon Valley Braves used their athleticism and forced a bunch of turnovers to double up the score 16-8 after the first period.

Things got a little more interesting in the second quarter as Santana was able to close the gap but the Braves behind Davion Rogers and his 14 first-half points were able to maintain a 32-26 lead at intermission.

“The team energy in the second half went way up and we were inspired by coach and his halftime speech. We changed up and were able to capitalize as we broke the press.” Said Sophomore Ethan Wolchko who was one of the big reasons the Sultans were able to make the comeback and pull out the victory.

Midway through the third quarter the Sultans took the momentum and swung it to their favor as Matt Hitchcock nailed three consecutive three-pointers to give the Sultans a lead for the first time in the contest. The Sultans would outscore the Braves in the third quarter 15-9 as both squads were tied 41-41 heading into the fourth quarter.

Hitchcock on the night tallied 15 points including the multiple three-pointers while grabbing 9 boards and had a key block late in the game, Wolchko scored 15 points and grabbed 3 boards while Brandon Simmons came up big as well with 14 points, 8 rebounds and dished out 7 assists.

Santana really turned up the heat in the fourth quarter forcing turnovers and rebounding the ball. They would actually pulldown 28 boards on the defensive end on the night and tally 40 boards altogether.

For the Braves, Rogers led with 28 points while Dashawn Henderson scored 11 points.

The loss for the Braves puts their record at 9-11 and 2-3 in league play while the Sultans improve to 9-14 and 3-2 in league play and stay in the race.
