SANTEE – In what started out a slow game that had everything from an assistant getting a technical foul to various stoppages the Mount Carmel Sun Devils were able to hold off the Santana Sultans in non-league action 38-29.

Early on in the first quarter, neither team shot particularly well but the Sun Devils would take a 5-4 lead after the first quarter.

Mount Carmel in the second quarter would take advantage of various opportunities and would extend their lead 20-12 at the break.

Leading the Sultans in the first half was Aaliyah Stone who scored 4 points as would Bella Terry who also had 4 points.

The Sun Devils started the second half as they had done in the second quarter as they took advantage and were able to outscore the Sultans in the third quarter 14-4 to lead 34-14 after three periods.

However, in the fourth quarter, the Sultans suddenly turned the tide a little as they went on an 11-0 run over a three-minute span to pull within 34-27.

A key three-pointer by Lakaila Aquiningoc nailed a three-pointer during the run and Brianna Jerig had a pick two to help spur the Sultans.

Unfortunately, the Sultans ran out of time and the Sun Devils would hold on.

Leading scorers for the Sultans were Stone who finished with 8 points and 7 rebounds, Aquiningoc contributed 7 points and also 5 boards, Jerig poured in 5 points, 3 rebounds, 6 steals and a block, Isis Taylor scored 4 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.
