SANTEE (9-6-19) – Last season these two teams met twice splitting both as the Mariners won the regular season match up 27-13 but the Sultans would get revenge in the playoffs winning 23-6.

Continuing the rivalry these two teams have had over the last few years the Santana Sultans hosted and didn’t show any kindness to their visitors.

The Sultans early on in the first quarter would take a 7-0 lead when Nathan Temple would find his favorite target Randy Smith for the 8-yard score.

They would add another score later on in the quarter with 4:50 remaining when Temple again would toss another score this time to Nathan Hughes to extend the lead 14-0.

The defense of the Sultans would harass the Mariners and get the ball back for the offense which would set up a long touchdown pass from Temple to Hughes to put them up 21-0.

Moving along to the second quarter with a three-score lead the Sultans were not satisfied as Temple again struck as he hit Donnie Kelly from 8-yards out to put them up 27-0.

Later on in the quarter after a defensive stop, the Sultans would add another score after Dean Landers almost broke away for a touchdown but would have to settle for a 37-yard return into Mariners territory.

The long-run back by Landers would set up Temple as Deja Vu occurred as Smith hauled in the long pass for the score to give them a 34-0 lead.

After the halftime festivities by the Sultans marching band and cheer squad the game continued but without the starters, as Coach Estes decided to give them a rest.

Early on in the third quarter, the Sultans would extend the lead when Nick Brase punched it in from six yards out.

After the last score to put the game way out of hand the officials declared running clock the rest of the second half.

On the night Sultans quarterback, Nathan Temple threw for 5 touchdowns and continued his quest for 40 touchdown passes in a season.

Receiving wise for the Sultans, Randy Smith caught 2 scores while Nathan Hughes also hauled in 2 scores.

Santana next week will travel down to the South Bay to take on another Division IV opponent in the Sweetwater Red Devils while the Mariners will travel to take on the Coronado Islanders.
