LAKESIDE (10-18-19) – It wasn’t easy but the El Capitan Vaqueros pulled out a two-point victory over the Granite Hills Eagles on Friday night.

On homecoming night in which the school was celebrating its 60th Anniversary which saw a ton of alumni, friends and family come out would also see the Vaqueros pull off the biggest win of the night in front of a packed house.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Vaqueros would strike first with 8:47 in the second quarter when Donny Green rumbled his way to the house from 24 yards out to make it 6-0 as the kick failed.

Granite Hills would eventually get on the board with about 2 minutes remaining in the half when Camden Vance booted a 20-yard field goal to make it 6-3. They would actually get the ball back and just before halftime with a little over a second left Vance would tie the game at 6-6 from 37-yards out with another field goal.

El Capitan in the third quarter would drive down the field and retake the lead with 7:09 to go when Wick Hauser found Sean Dickson from 5-yards out to make it 12-6.

The Eagles would make a furious comeback and score the next 10 points courtesy of another Vance field goal and a Justice McComb 65-yard catch and score to Matthew Keely. Keely would get behind the El Capitan defense when McComb found him open racing to the end zone.

Leading 16-12 after the long catch and score by Keely the Eagles were back in business but back came the Vaqueros thanks to their field general Hauser who again would give them the lead. Hauser with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter stepped back and found his way into the end zone as he scrambled his way for a 13-yard score and an 18-16 lead.

Things got really interesting in the fourth quarter as the Vaqueros would extend their lead 25-16 thanks to Xavier Peace who scored with under four minutes on a 13-yard run.

Granite Hills about a minute or so later worked their way down the field and would cut the deficit to 2 points on a McComb scramble from 22-yards out.

El Capitan would hold off the Eagles for the big win on homecoming and also one that will boost their playoff chances and also pick up their first win of the season.

On the night for the Vaqueros, Hauser completed 9 of 13 for 136 yards and a TD, he also had 68 yards rushing and a score.

Receiving wise, Savigon Yokley caught 4 passes for 101 yards while Dickson had the score and 17 yards on the night.

Donny Green finished with 82 yards rushing and a TD and Peace had 13 yards and the score.

Granite Hills with the loss has now lost three games in a row in a season for the first time in quite some time while the Vaqueros will take their momentum into next week in what is surely another big playoff type of game for them.
