VAQUEROS FINISH OFF LANCERS START TO FINISH WHILE KNIGHTS SUFFER FIRST LOSS

EL CAPITAN 61, CARLSBAD 50

Last season when these two teams met the Carlsbad Lancers beat the El Capitan Vaqueros by 30 points. This years contest went a little different as the Vaqueros jumped out on top early.

El Capitan right away scored the first couple baskets of the contest to lead 6-0. They eventually upped the lead 11-4 and would lead 14-9 before Carlsbad pulled within 16-15 to end the first quarter.

Leading by only a point the Vaqueros again turned the heat up on the Lancers in the second quarter as they raced to a 26-19 lead and finish out with a 30-19 lead at the break.

Mackenzie Curtis led the Vaqueros with 10 points in the first half.

Things in the second half continued for the Vaqueros as they stretched out their run to 22-3 and would lead by as many as 20 points twice to lead 50-34 heading into the final period of play.

Carlsbad finally got a little momentum in the fourth quarter as they would pull within 55-40 with 4:25 remaining but the Vaqueros kept composure and finished things out.

On the night four Vaqueros scored in double digits and a fifth came close. Leading the Vaqueros was Curtis who finished with a double-double of 23 points and over 10 boards, Devon Bullock, Jordan Grady and Emma Driskill each had 10 points.

“It was an excellent win, Stephanie Yeakle and Emma Driskill held their best player to 10 points and everyone did their job.” Said Vaqueros Head Coach Darin Curtis.

With the big win the Vaqueros improve to 5-4 while the Lancers fall to 5-3.

El Capitan continues their schedule next Tuesday, December 11 against Monte Vista in Spring Valley at 6 pm.

 

CALVIN CHRISTIAN 41, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 38

In a matchup of top contending teams for their Division and what was considered a tough test for the Foothills Knights the Crusaders pulled out the close victory on Friday night.

The Knights who came into the contest averaging 64 points a contest led by Ellie Turk, unfortunately, got out to a slow start against Calvin Christian and the shots that had been dropping previously, unfortunately, didn’t on the night.

Leading the Knights in scoring was Ellie Turk who canned 16 points, she also dished out 8 assists, grabbed 5 boards and blocked 4 shots. Also contributing in the double digits was Nataly Bravo who scored 12 points and had 4 steals and 4 assists, Arantxa Fonseca grabbed 10 boards and scored 8 points.

The loss by the Knights was their first setback of the season and their record is now 7-1 while the Crusaders improve to 4-0.

Foothills Christian continues their season on Monday, December 10th as they travel down to San Ysidro to take on the Cougars for a 7 pm tipoff.
