EL CAPITAN 14, VALLEY CENTER 13

Lakeside – It is always tough to go into a game shorthanded especially when you are playing a team that is supposed to beat you.

However the El Capitan Vaqueros had other plans in their game against the visiting Valley Center Jaguars. The reason being was because of the absence of starting quarterback Wick Hauser who was banged up in the 26-24 loss the previous week against Mater Dei Catholic.

So without Hauser at the helm the Vaqueros went to the next man in line and that was Antonio Olivieri who normally plays tight end and also is at the defensive end position.

On the night Olivieri completed 11 of 21 passes for 97 yards.

The other in the plan of the Vaqueros was the defense which was led by the Lovato twins, Chase and Chance. It started when Chase intercepted a Jaguar pass and ran it back 36 yards to the house for the 14-7 lead with about nine minutes to go in the second quarter.

The Jaguars scored first to go up 7-0 as they took advantage of a nicely placed ball in the back of the right part of the end zone.

Valley Center had other opportunities to score but couldn’t take advantage of any of them on the night.  One of those opportunities was a drive that resulted in a tipped pass in the end zone that was picked off by Chase Lovato to save a touchdown.

In the fourth quarter the Jaguars were driving and threatening when Chance Lovato was able to break through the offensive line and just plow quarterback Rikki Mazzetti for a big loss with about two minutes to play. Chance would make another big play on the next play as he stepped in front of a pass from Mazzetti to basically ice the game with the pick.

The defense limited the Jaguars passing game to just a tad over 100 yards and the three interceptions and only one touchdown.

It was a big win for the Vaqueros who had come oh so close the previous week and also with the win they will surely move up in the ranking for playoff seeding in Division II.
