EL CAPITAN 49, UNIVERSITY CITY 35

In front of a great home crowd, the home team El Capitan Vaqueros started out slow as the University City Centurions led by Riley Reinhardt and her 6 points in the quarter outpaced the Vaqueros 13-6.

The Vaqueros in the first quarter just couldn’t buy a basket and knew they would have to make some adjustments. Those adjustments came in the second quarter as Mackenzie Curtis poured in 11 of her team-high 30 points and the defense took over to turn the tide en route to a 15-6 outcome in the second quarter and a 21-19 lead at the break.

Both teams started the second half going back and forth but the Vaqueros would eventually push their lead to 37-30 after three quarters with a 16-11 advantage. Again, Curtis led with 8 points including a pair of three-pointers.

El Capitan would eventually pull away in the fourth quarter with defense as they limited the Centurions to only five points and outscoring them 12-5.

Both Emma Driskill and Kylie Mead for the Vaqueros had 6 points while for the Centurions Reinhardt scored 11 and Kilee Horner contributed 9 points.

With the victory, the Vaqueros will host league rival and foe Grossmont in the Semi-Finals on Wednesday, February 20th at 7 PM.  It will be the third time these two teams will have met this season with the Foothillers taking each prior contest by 8 and 3 points respectively.
