Spring Valley – The battle between Casteel who made the six hour trek from Arizona and the host Monarchs would go past regulation as the Colts won 28-21 in bonus play.

Colts quarterback Gunner Cruz got the scoring going when he tossed a deep ball to Brandt Goodwin along with a short run to put them up 14-0. The quick two score lead led many to think that the game was about to get out of hand as many had seen the impressive scores on Max Preps and that was the talk among locals.

But not so fast, as the Monarchs answered thanks to a 17-yard strike from Emmil Henderson to Amir Conley who hauled it in for the score to make it 14-7. Monte Vista than was able to tie it when Jahmon McClendon rumbled in for a 1-yard score on a fourth and one deal.

However the Colts retook the lead as they converted a big play to go up 21-14. Monte Vista wouldn’t go away though and was able to score again to tie the game 21-21 thanks to a McClendon 1-yard score with about four minutes in the third quarter.

Both teams would hold each other which included a huge interception by Logan Schmidt of Monte Vista.

The clock read all zeroes so bonus ball was to be played between the two teams.

The visiting Colts drove down the field on their possession and would eventually score on a Cruz to Nelson spectacular catch to go up 28-21.

Monte Vista had one last shot to push the game into a second overtime but unfortunately on the first three downs couldn’t do anything. So it all came down to a fourth and three and you know who the Monarchs would give the ball to in that situation. The Colts were ready and McClendon who took the handoff thought he had the first down but the defense of the Colts met him just before the last yard line and brought him down to preserve the victory.

“My coaching staff and I were very impressed with the Monarchs coaching staff. They are a class act and the players played till the bitter end.” Said Casteel coach Spencer Stowers.

Casteel who is highly ranked as some outlets have them as high as #1 in Arizona now moves their record to 4-0 while the Monarchs and their record is evened at 2-2.
