WARHAWKS SPRING INTO VICTORY OVER EAGLES

SAN DIEGO (9-6-19) – A week earlier the home team Madison Warhawks lost on the road to Steele Canyon 19-14 and this week they faced a similar opponent in the Granite Hills Eagles.

However, unlike the previous week, the result would be different as the Warhawks took advantage of Eagles mistakes en route to their victory on Friday night.

On the defensive side of the ball for the Warhawks, Herman Smith and Sam Owens would each pickoff Justice McCombs (15-31 for 201 yards and 4 TDs, 3 INTs) and take them back to the house for scores.

KE’ONTAE SPRINGS EYES THE END ZONE

Right off the bat, the Warhawks would take an early 6-0 lead when Smith stepped in front and ran it back for 45-yards. Trailing wouldn’t deter the Eagles as McCombs would find James Johnson (4 catches for 94 yards, 2 TDs) for a 24-yard touchdown to give them the 7-6 lead.

EAGLES MCCOMB LOOKS FOR HIS TARGET

Madison in the second quarter would turn up the heat as they scored three touchdowns which included a pair of Ke’ontae Springs runs of 39 and 5 yards. Their other score came courtesy of a pick-6 by Owens who raced to the end zone for 58-yards.

The only scoring for the Eagles in the second quarter came when they accrued a safety.

The score at halftime went in favor of the Warhawks as they led 26-9.

Springs on the night would run for 131-yards and three touchdowns. Not only did he run but he contributed at the quarterback position as he threw a 35-yard touchdown pass.

Madison would stretch their lead to 32-9. The Eagles though wouldn’t go down without a fight as McComb would find Johnson for a touchdown to cut the deficit 32-15.

Granite Hills would eventually pull within 32-29 with about 2 minutes in the fourth quarter when McComb threw another score.

The Warhawks though would put the game away with another score.

With the win the Warhawks even the all-time series at 1-1 with Granite Hills winning the previous contest all the way back in 1975 when the contest was played at Aztec Bowl.
